Well, it’s been a while! ;) I thought it might be time to write a bit of an explanation as to why I’ve been so quiet for the past few years music-wise! And why I’ve suddenly reappeared! Is anyone still here?! ;)
So here goes...after leaving university and going home to the Island (I think that might be where we left off!), I basically had no idea what to do with my life! Music was (and is) my passion, but I felt that I couldn’t earn a living from it - I couldn’t support myself on money from gigs and CD sales alone, so if I wanted independence I was going to have to sacrifice the full-time music and get a ‘proper job’.
I was lucky enough to find something that I enjoyed doing fairly quickly and kept the gigs going in the evenings so that I didn’t get too out of practice. I supported Joan Armatrading again on a few of her shows and did gigs here and there...but working in an office 9 - 5 before rushing home, loading the car up with music gear, playing a 3 hour gig and getting home around 11pm was getting really tiring. I was losing interest and dreaded the mad rush of gigging after getting home from work, so then the point came when I stopped taking bookings and decided to have a bit of a break.
I still loved listening to and writing music, but lost confidence in producing my songs and videos and generally got out of the swing of things.
So why the sudden change now? I guess I had one of those epiphanies. ;)
One day I was trawling through my iTunes library and stumbled across a track that a friend had sent me. He’d taken one of my songs and decided to add his own instruments to it. When I listened to it I actually felt proud to have written the song...this hadn’t happened before as I’m normally too critical to enjoy listening to anything I’ve written! But I actually really enjoyed listening to what he’d done, despite the fact that I’d written/was singing on it. He’d brought it to life and made it sound like I’d wanted it to sound when I was writing it, but I’d struggled with production/recording and he'd done a great job with it.
And that little moment inspired me to start writing songs again, so here I am! :)
This time I’m focusing on the Celtic sound that I’ve always leant towards, with the long term aim of recording an album with musicians in a professional studio (rather than me playing all the synthesised instruments in my room!). That way I can focus on creating the album that I've always wanted to, with the input and creativity of other musicians in the studio.
I’m still working 9 - 5, but instead of gigging I’ll be writing now that the urge to create music has returned. :)
It’d be lovely if you could join me on the next step of my musical journey - or maybe rejoin me if you were here before!
P.S - New addition to the family! Meet Colin the Italian Greyhound…(he says hello).
