Just a little note to say Happy New Year from me. :)
2016 is now firmly behind us along with the mad rush of Christmas, and the blank canvas that is 2017 lies ahead.
Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions?
A couple of years ago I decided that for the entire year I was going to draw a little doodle everyday and post it online.
To be honest, I set the resolution (or challenge) quite flippantly and didn’t really realise the commitment it would entail...some days it’d get to 11.55 at night and I’d panic and quickly sketch an idea out, but sometimes those worked better than the ones I’d spent an hour on!
“What’s the point?” you might be thinking! I asked myself the very same question a fair few times...I could’ve stopped at any point during the year, but it kind of turned into a little OCD thing where I HAD to do a drawing - trust me, it was a major relief when the year ended and I didn’t have to - but everyday without fail, wherever I was, whatever I was doing, I’d stop and do a drawing.
They were silly little drawings, but some turned out fairly well and a small greetings cards publisher decided they’d like to use some of my designs. My cards are now being sold in a few shops around the country and abroad - if you’re in the UK have a little look in the cards section in your local Waterstones. :)
So the moral of the story is...even if you feel like you’re carrying out what feels like a pointless task, or you’re not really getting anywhere with something, don’t stop! Have belief in your ideas and commit to them fully.
I still find it amazing that people want to buy my cards, but it’s not at all what I expected or wished for when I set myself this task. I just wanted to prove to myself that if I set myself a task, I had the ability to see it through - and I think that’s the greatest thing I got back from doing it. I now know that if I set myself a target I actually have the ability to accomplish it and I won’t just talk myself out of it because “why am I bothering anyway?”
This year I won’t be doing a drawing everyday, but maybe I’ll come up with another little goal. :) If you’d like to see some of my designs they’re available to view here: http://www.charliefoxtrot.co.uk/hollyspicturecorner/
It’d be great to hear if you’ve set yourself any goals or resolutions for the New Year!
Lots of love,
